Permaculture & Community at Otepic
Strengthening the community through knowledge transfer and cooperation in agriculture
About
Since its foundation in 2008, Otepic has been a self-help project that offers residents of the Mitume slum a perspective. Otepic Farm grows its own food, practises reforestation and sustainable water supply, uses renewable energy and provides community building and knowledge transfer from permaculture to other small farmers in the region.
OTEPIC's motto is: Let's come together in community! For 12 years, OTEPIC has been providing training for local people, running permaculture gardens in four locations, caring for 23 orphans, providing free clean drinking water for 3,000 people, feeding street children, organizing tree planting, reaching more than 50,000 people from 25 communities and advocating for appropriate and peaceful coexistence.
OTEPIC focuses on training in sustainable nutrition and permaculture. To this end, an ecological peace village with a permaculture school is being built on 10 hectares of land for conferences, training and exchanges for Kenyans and the whole of East Africa.
Otepic is also currently working with small farmers on the Mushroom Manufactory. This involves setting up a production facility and a training center to grow and sell edible mushrooms. The agricultural waste products from the Otepic farm are used to produce mushrooms, which generate additional income for the cooperative.
